Admission Requirements
Upon successful completion of the Medication program, the students becomes eligible to take the Texas Certified Medication exam and like the Nurses Aide Program, successful students are enlisted into the Texas State Registry.
Medication Aides are persons permitted by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services to administer medications to residents in:

- Nursing facilities,
- Intermediate care and community-based facilities for people who are mentally retarded,
- Correctional institutions, and
- Assisted living (personal care) facilities.
- Procedures for preparation and administration of medications.
- Responsibility, control, accountability, storage and safeguarding of medication.
- Use of reference material
- Documentation of medications in residents’ clinical records.
- Line of authority in the facility.
- Responsibilities and liabilities associated with the administration and safeguarding of medication.
- Allowable and prohibited practices of permit holders
- Drug reactions and side effects of medications commonly administered to facility residents.
- Rules and Regulations covering the Medication Aide Training Program.
- Course Content: 100 hours Classroom, 30 hours Lab Activity, 10 hours Clinical.
- The clinical training will be held at the student’s place of employment and must be supervised by a qualified nurse or facility administrator.
Admission Requirements
In order to be accepted into Medication Aide Training applicants must:- be able to read, write, speak and understand English;
- present proof of being at least 18 years of age;
- be free of communicable diseases and in suitable physical and emotional health to safely administer medications;
- present proof of being a high school graduate or having a general equivalency diploma;
- be employed as a Certified Nurse Aide listed on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry in active status and currently employed in a facility licensed under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 242 on the class start date or
- be employed on the class start date as a non-licensed direct care staff in a facility licensed under Chapter 247 or an ICF-MR facility, State School for the Mentally Retarded or for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and have 90 days previous employment as non-licensed direct care staff in the year preceding the class start date.
